Healthy teeth play a vital role in your child’s overall growth and development. They support proper chewing and digestion, clear speech, and help guide permanent teeth into place. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your child’s smile healthy:
- Brush twice a day. Children should brush at least two times daily. Until about age 7, they’ll need your help to do it thoroughly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head that’s gentle on their teeth and gums.
- Floss daily. Flossing removes plaque and food particles between the teeth and below the gumline, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.
- Visit the dentist regularly. Your child should see a dentist within six months of their first tooth appearing, and continue with checkups every six months after that.
- Ask about preventive treatments. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants offer extra protection against cavities. Our pediatric dentist can let you know what’s best for your child.
- Promote a balanced diet. Limit sugary and acidic snacks, and encourage healthy meals to support strong teeth and gums.
- Use a mouth guard for sports. If your child plays sports, a mouth guard can protect their teeth and soft tissues from injury.
- Monitor thumb-sucking habits. It’s normal for babies and toddlers to suck on fingers or pacifiers. Most children stop by age 4, but if the habit continues, our team can help guide them gently toward stopping.
